Strasbourg, the capital of Christmas

The Trips Subcommittee has chosen Strasbourg as the ideal destination for Christmas, even if it is a bit too early; our visit is scheduled for the 7th and 8th December and combines both having fun all around the Christmas markets and visiting the Institutions based there.

December in Strasbourg means, above all, the immense Christmas market, which has existed for 445 years and is without doubt the oldest Christmas market in France! http://www.noel.strasbourg.eu/

At the same time, Strasbourg is definitely well worth a visit, to discover its history, its cuisine and its unique atmosphere. Its monumental Cathedral together with the entire city centre, which is listed as UNESCO World Heritage, make the it one of the most attractive places of the Alsace region.

Moreover, since the city stands as a symbol of reconciliation between peoples and of the future of Europe, it is home to the Council of Europe and the European Parliament.

Our trip timeline is the following:

Sunday:
Meet at 08:00 at the Lux station, so as to take the 08:29 train:

Luxembourg – Strasbourg
Lux-Metz 8.29-9.19
Metz-Str 9.36-11.11

It is better to buy our tickets on Saturday or Friday. Keep in mind that the Saar-Lor-Lux discount group ticket is valid only for the weekend.

Meet at 12:30 at the Strasbourg Cathedral, so as to go all around the city:

We should not miss the cathedral of Notre-Dame, the Kammerzell house, the Petite France quarter, the Church of Saint-Thomas and, if the weather is nice, the Orangerie Park. http://www.otstrasbourg.fr/en/discover/monuments-museums-and-other-sites-to-visit.html

Moreover, around the city's squares we can find a lot of interesting places; go shopping around Place Kleber, buy souvenirs in the Cathedral area, have coffee or drinks at Place Broglie (Opera) and discover the student life at Place de la Republique (University).

Meet in the evening (time to be fixed) for the Christmas markets:

The Christmas Market itself spreads out into many streets and squares of the city centre, in particular Place Broglie and the Cathedral Square. Several hundreds of stall holders tempt the stroller with original gifts and traditional ornaments for decorating the tree and the nativity scene. There are also many treats to feast ourselves on: sweets, mulled wine and doughnuts. A giant Christmas tree is planted in Place Kleber close to the "Sharing Village", an ice skating rink at the foot of the cathedral.
http://www.otstrasbourg.fr/en/discover/strasbourg-capital-of-christmas.html
Unfortunately, we can only check in at F1 Hotel after 15:00.

Monday:

Meet in the morning (time and place to be fixed) and visit the Institutions together:

1. 9:30-11:30 – European Parliament, we have to arrive at least 20 min earlier
2. 14:30-16:30 – Council of Europe
Since the Institutions are not located in the centre, we can have a light lunch there.

Take the train back to Luxembourg:

Strasbourg - Luxembourg
Stra-Metz 16.50-18.29
Metz-Lux 18.38-19.30
OR
Stra-Thionville 17.50-18.29
Thionville -Lux 18.38-19.30
OR
Stra-Lux 19.50-21.59

We can book our return tickets from Strasbourg on Saturday, as soon as we arrive at the station there.

More suggestions:

- The Petite France district and the cathedral are definitely a must-see (we can also climb to the cathedral platform, it is free the first Sunday of the month and you can see the city panorama from there.)

- If anyone wants, they can take a boat ride, it takes one hour and goes through the city centre and to the European institutions (it’s 12,50€ with some reductions for +20 groups). More info: http://www.batorama.fr/

- Visiting the Christmas market – there are several markets across the city, one of them is a visiting country village (Belgium this year). However, Christmas market closes at 20.00 on Sundays.

Food and Drinks:

- We should not miss the local white wine and the local specialty tarte flambée at "au brasseur". http://www.aubrasseur.fr/

- Coffee at "cafe des anges". http://www.cafe-des-anges.fr/ OR on a boat, as some of the famous "peniches" are transformed into cafés and restaurants, tram stop "Gallia".

LES MARDIS DE L’ART AT CASINO LUXEMBOURG

The emerging fashion brand MAREUNROL'S, based in Riga (Latvia), was established in 2005 by designers Marite Mastina-Peterkopa and Rolands Peterkops.MAREUNROL'S collections are concept based. Their designs are usually accompanied by specially designed sets, scenography, video projections, installations, photography, i.e. any creative outputs that help to communicate their story. Both designers constantly look for new mediums and ways of presenting fashion, and search for new art disciplines that could be incorporated into the world of fashion design. This is why at MAREUNROL'S shows the work might seem to be avant-garde, but in reality it is ready-to-wear fashion.

Visit to the European Parliament

On November 11th, the European Commission Trainees had the opportunity to visit the European Parliament in Luxembourg, their “home” for the past two months.

We were received by Mr. Schroeder, from the Information Office, who had prepared a very interesting presentation about the most important aspects of this European institution.

After the presentation, we had the opportunity to make some photos in the plenary meeting room where some of the plenary sessions of the Parliament take place.

A few curiosities about the Parliament:
  • It's the only directly-elected European Union institution. The Members of Parliament are elected by the European citizens for a 5-year period. The last European elections took place in May 2014.
  • The European Parliament has 3 official headquarters: Strasbourg, Brussels and Luxembourg. We are very lucky because we will visit the 3 headquarters during our traineeship.
  • The current President of this institution is Mr Martin Schulz, from Germany and he was elected last July. In fact, Mr Schulz is the first President in the history of the European Parliament to be re-elected for a second two and a half year term.
  • The European Parliament has been steadily gaining power over recent decades and now acts as a co-legislator for nearly all EU law. Together with the Council, the Parliament adopts or amends proposals from the Commission. Parliament also supervises the work of the Commission and adopts the European Union's budget.
  • The ordinary legislative procedure is the main legislative procedure by which directives and regulations are adopted. It involves the cooperation of the institutional triangle (Commission, Council and Parliament).
  • The number of MPEs during the legislature 2014-2019 is 751. Germany is the country with the largest numbers of MPEs (96), and Estonia, Cyprus, Luxembourg and Malta, the countries with the smallest number of MPEs (6 each one).
  • The members of the European Parliament sit in political groups, including the group of non-inscrits.
    • Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats)
    • Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament
    • Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe
    • European Conservatives and Reformists Group
    • Confederal Group of the European United Left - Nordic Green Left
    • Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance
    • Europe of freedom and direct democracy Group (which include UKIP and Five Star Mouvement)
    • Non-inscrits (which include the MPEs of Front National)
  • 25 Members of at least of 7 different countries are needed to form a political group. Having a political group have some advantages as more budget or more time to speak during the plenary sessions.

We enjoyed the visit a lot and we are looking forward to visiting the others European institutions and to getting to know more about the European Union!

Domain name: Metz, 22nd November - Password: Baptiste

Metz, almost an hour far from Luxembourg, is even better than its name sounds; it is pronounced "mess".

Keep calm and let's deal with this "Metz-Mess"; first, be sure that you have typed correctly the aforementioned domain name and password. Baptiste, our favourite French, has arranged all the details and promised Metz to be nothing but a non-stop party!

And now some headlines of the trip to Metz:

Meeting point:
1) For those who want to visit the Center Pompidou, a contemporary art museum (http://www.centrepompidou-metz.fr/), it would be nice to take the train at 11am (for those over 26 years there is a return ticket + Pompidou entrance for 25€ for those under 26 ask for a Saar-lor-lux ticket http://www.cfl.lu/espaces/voyageurs/en/billets-et-abonnements/billets-internationaux/saar-lor-lux/saar-lor-lux).

2) For those not interested in Pompidou you can take the train at 12.30.
In any case, we will all meet at the back of the railway station in Metz (Pompidou side) at 1.30pm.

Around the City:
For those who want to discover the city with Baptiste the plan is the following: Cathedral, Opera theatre, Trinitaire, Temple neuf, Musée de la cour d'or and Christmas markets.

Dinner:
For those interested in having a French dinner in Metz, a restaurant will be reserved (approx. 15 euros).

Drinks:
First drinks at around 9pm at "Mojito bar", from where the party begins. The place closes at 2am but there is a free shuttle bus to the club "Le rouge" for those who want to keep partying till the first train or the second… or even the third!

Can’t wait to meet you there!

Charity Subcommitte

As a spokesperson of Charity Subcommittee please allow me to introduce this valuable group. I am proud to say that we are 9 enthusiasts who are willing to help and support those in need. We are currently focusing on the two key projects:
  • Firstly, on an international level we decided to continue supporting a boy from Rwanda and a girl from Afghanistan through ActionAid. We have materials that allow us to understand the conditions they are living in and to see their progress through regular updates from ActionAid.
  • Secondly, our local work is linked to the SOS Village Monde who we are aiming to help not only by organising activities for children from the SOS Village Monde in Mersch but also through fundraising and awareness raising campaigns both within and outside of European Commission. As the Christmas is nearly here we are focusing our attention on the presents for children in cooperation with Interinstitutional Children's Centre (CPE) as well as by collecting items from trainees in all European Institutions in Luxemburg. Other examples of our activities are e.g. Baking day for Charity with intention to bake and sell Christmas cookies or Fundraising House Party at the Charity Spokesperson Nina herself.
We are, however, hoping to have enough time and funds to broaden our focus from children towards homeless people, refugees and stateless persons.

If you want to help this bunch of trainees to make someone else's days better, please contact us. Every little helps.

Our members: Petronille Bogaert, Pavel Dvorak, Andrea Gatto, Nina Jaganjacova, Angela Kangro, Zrna Pavličevič, Yuri Samuel Sønderberg, Liva Svarce, Laurien Teugels.

Plan B for Saturday

Rain won't be a reason to skip a trip. In case it rains this Saturday, we'll go to Schengen.

The name Schengen is inextricably linked to peace and freedom in Europe, as it was in this small wine-growing village on the River Moselle that an important chapter in European history was written in 1985. Signed onboard the MS Princesse Marie-Astrid, the Schengen Agreement was the first step towards the disappearance of borders in Europe. It also put Schengen on the map. Schengen was chosen because of its ideal location in the Three-Border-Region. It's here where the three Benelux countries meet Germany and France. The abolition of controls at the internal frontiers consolidated the Member States of the Schengen Area. Now the Schengen Area counts 26 Member-States and the Agreement allows over 400 million Europeans travelling without barriers.

The plan is as follows:

Morning Meeting:
Meet you at the Gare 10.00.
10.10 bus 175 from Gare Centrale to Mondorf, Christophorus 10.35
10.40 bus 185 from Mondorf, Christophorus to Schengen, Koerch (third stop in Schengen, opposite Total gas station) 10.55
Total duration: 45 min

Way back: There is a bus every hour at 9 past (15.09, 16.09, 17.09…)

Activities there:
European Museum Schengen: Located within the European Centre, the European Museum Schengen was inaugurated on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Schengen Agreement. This interactive museum retraces the development of Europe in nine chapters, while providing background information on the famous treaty, it is open from 11:00 to 17:00 and admission is free. http://www.schengen-tourist.lu/index.php?idnavigation=43&fidlanguage=1

Walk around the town: Schengen is the sunniest region of Luxembourg. A mild weahter characterizes the small, romantic village with special flora in the Luxembourgish Moselle. The medieval castle of the region is operating as a hotel. However, for your information, the castle's most famous resident was the French writer Victor Hugo, who during his stay in 1871 as a guest of the Collart family created a drawing of the building using coffee grounds.

Profiles

Pavel, President
Halo! I am a Czech trainee at Eurostat. I was lucky enough to live in different parts of the world and I never seem to get tired of meeting new people on the way. I am slightly obsessed with electronic music and I have fallen in love with squash and frisbee ultimate. I am very happy to live in the small town of Luxembourg - you can ride your bike everywhere! My current short-term goal? To get paid as much as the mythical Luxembourgish bus drivers.

Introducing the Stage Committee

Q: “Facilitate” my life? What does that mean?
UTFG! Basically, we just try to make your life easier. True, we do not go to work for you when you are hungover, we do not make your laundry when you are lazy nor do we give you any money when you have made a decimal point error in your accounts. Instead, we and our lovely sub-committees organize social, public and career events for you and your future!

Q: Whoa! My future? But I don’t know what I want to do! Do you?
OK, our mission is very simple - we just want to make our time in Luxembourg enjoyable for all of us! Above all, we too are just trainees and when we are old, we do not want to remember our time in Luxembourg as the time “when I worked my ass off” or “when I was able to fulfill even the deadliest of deadlines”. No! We want to remember great nights out, sleeping a little, occasional love stories, being charitable, and, hopefully, obtaining a rich work experience in an EU institution.

Q: OK, I get it. But why did you choose to become a committee member in the first place?
Since the very beginning it was clear that we are a very strong, well-integrated group of trainees. We felt like we deserve the best of the best and the inner drive, deep inside us, fuelled our urge to lead :)

Q: Huh.. very poetic. Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
Yes, there is! We are just trainees like everybody else. We are here to socialize, have fun, do good, make friends and, inevitably, set on to start a proper career. We are here to help you with all of these aspects. When you need anything, tell us and we will fix it! Today, you probably haven’t heard it yet, so here it goes: “Make the best out of it!” :)

Sincerely yours,
EC Stage Committee Luxembourg

Who are we?

This is a period of changes in the European Commission! New President, new Commissioners and of course, new trainees! 50 of them, lost in a small multilingual country called Luxembourg!

First of all, let us introduce ourselves. We are the Communication Subcommittee and our job is to keep you informed about everything that is happening in Luxembourg. If you wish to be the first to find out about all the activities and events the trainees are preparing… no doubt, you have come to the right place!

Why are we called the Luxembourg Survival Kit, you might ask?

Well, as you have already realized yourselves, Luxembourg is not the cheapest place and getting by with the trainees' salary can be somewhat challenging. But don't worry, that is where we step in. Our aim is to be your survival kit in this city, so as to allow you to make the most out of this whole experience.

Last but not least! We need you to help us out as well; we need your collaboration. We wish for all the trainees to get involved in the blog to make it everyone's blog! Bring out the writer in you and send us your stories, your cultural reviews, describe the activities organised by your subcommittees, and all the ideas that you want to share with us! Everything you wish to send us is welcome!

We are looking forward to working on this blog and enjoying it together!

The Communication Subcommittee is Angela, María, Mateja, Regina and Sofia.
